Benefits

Living (or sedum) roof shelters not only absorb carbon but help to capture contaminant particles. In return they give back clean air. As well as air filtration they also help to attenuate water, slowing down and taking up some of the storm water before it disappears down our sewer systems. Living roof shelters give a lot of this water back to the atmosphere via evapotranspiration, all helping to offset the effects of the Urban Heat Island.

A green roof shelter has many benefits at economic, ecological and societal levels. Living roofs provide a rainwater buffer, purifies the air, reduces the ambient temperature, regulates the indoor temperature, saves energy and encourages a large amount of biodiversity.

The images below show examples of a living roof bus shelter manufactured and installed by Euroshel. Sedum cassettes are housed in a roof tray, with a drainage system incorporated, water then drains away into a land drain.
